New Mandatory EV Safety Standards Take Effect July 1 with Stricter Thermal Runaway and Testing Requirements

Starting July 1, 2025, two mandatory national standards for electric vehicle safety—the "Electric Vehicle Safety Requirements" (GB 18384-2025) and the "Safety Requirements for Power Batteries for Electric Vehicles" (GB 38031-2025)—will come into effect in China. The updated standards place greater emphasis on electrical safety, elevating the thermal runaway test requirement to "no fire, no explosion" for battery packs. New test items have been added, including underbody impact testing, fast-charging cycle safety validation, and full-vehicle scraping tests. For the first time, the standard explicitly mandates a physical "one-button emergency power cut-off" device, replacing software-dependent controls to improve safety and response time during accident rescue operations.
